What you need
- A Mac with Apple silicon or Intel, on macOS 12 or later.
- Bitwig Studio 5.2 or later, or Ableton Live 12 (any edition, Lite included). Groovr.io works with both if you have both.
- An internet connection to sign in. Your projects and your voice stay on your Mac.
- About 800 MB of space: Groovr.io and its speech model.
Installing
Run the installer
Open Groovr.pkg. It installs Groovr.io for everyone on this Mac, with your password or Touch ID; on its Destination step you can install it for you alone instead, with no password. On its Customize step, keep the plugin formats your DAW uses: VST3 for Bitwig and Live, Audio Unit for Live and other hosts. Using Bitwig? Keep VST3 ticked.
It puts Bitwig's extension and Live's control surface where each DAW looks for them. Anyone else on the Mac gets theirs the first time they open Groovr.io.
Turn it on in your DAW
Groovr.io talks to your DAW through a small bridge. Open the DAW (or restart it, if it was open during the install), then:
Bitwig Studio
- Open Settings → Controllers.
- Click Add Controller, choose Groovr, then Groovr Bridge.
- Click Add.
Ableton Live
- Open Settings → Link, Tempo & MIDI.
- Under Control Surface, choose Groovr in an empty row.
- Leave its Input and Output on None.
With both DAWs, do this in each.
Open its window
Put the Groovr.io plugin on your Master track (Live: Main) and open its window. On the Master it can also listen to your mix, for its rough balance and its bass check.
Live doesn't list it? Settings → Plug-Ins, turn on the VST3 or Audio Unit folder, and click Rescan.
Click Sign in in Groovr.io's window: your free trial of its AI starts there, no card needed.
The first time, Groovr.io fetches its speech model (488 MB, once). You can type to it meanwhile.
Groovr.app
The same window outside your DAW, in Applications; Spotlight finds it. The first time you open it, macOS asks to let it reach your Documents folder, where your projects and Groovr.io's records of them live: allow it, or Groovr.io cannot keep its records for songs saved there.
If it doesn't connect
- The window says Groovr isn't turned on yet: step 2 is still to do, in that DAW.
- The window says Groovr.io's bridge has stopped answering: in Bitwig, turn the Groovr controller off and on again in Settings → Controllers; in Live, set its Control Surface to None, then back to Groovr. If it still doesn't answer, restart the DAW.
